Sigh of Relief

I had my PS3 for three years and mostly used it to watch movies. After getting my hands on IronMan 2 in blu-ray I tried to play the movie only to find out my PS3 wouldn't read the disc. After multiple attempts, including other movies and games, my PS3s' disc reading abilities was dead. After lots of research I found out that a number of units' lasers go bad and Sony wanted $200 to fix it when it's out of warranty. Luckily I found that it could be easily replaced, which lead me to finding this product. Not only was it cheap, but it arrived very fast and was truly easy to install. After putting everything together, my PS3 could now read discs again. I would recommend this to anyone who had the same issues I had with my PS3. Boo Sony for not acknowledging this issue and offering a fix similar to what Microsoft did with the red ring of death.

I am typing up this review a mere day after replacing my dysfunctional stock PS3 bluray lens (on an older 60GB PS3) with this product. Bearing that in mind, this review only reflects my initial thoughts and may be subject to change pending the ongoing performance of the product; I've been hearing that some of these replacement kits (not necessarily this model) tend to go bad very early in their life.Installation was quite easy if you are patient and do not rush. I initially made the mistake of disassembling the bluray drive to find that I left a disc inside the drive. Do NOT disassemble the drive with a disc inside of it. Some of the mechanisms, specifically those repsonsible for insertion and ejection of the disc, are in a state of tension with a disc present and will not go back together easily. Youtube is a good source for DIY videos regarding lens replacement.The only comment I can make regarding product performance is that it is working normally, and that is all I asked for. If it holds up, then I'll stand by my initial assessment that this is an excellent, cost-effective alternative to other fixes available at the moment. For roughly $30, it's at least worth a try before exploring other options.
